Business Practices of supply companies using variable rate plans called into question

A Chicago Illinois utility watchdog group, the Citizen’s Utility Board, received considerable media coverage for their analysis of business practices of some electricity supply companies.

Highlights of the report include:

  1. 150% increase in customer complaints
  2. Many complaints related to customers signing up for low introductory rates that are switched to a variable rate plans without their knowledge
  3. Door-to-door sales people with promises of saving only to find claims are not accurate.

While the study focuses on some of the bad apples and the actions of a handful of companies, the authors of the report also stressed that “many suppliers are acting appropriately.”

One company highlighted in the report has been very active in New Hampshire and recently began a direct mail campaign in Maine.  The Chicago Sun Times picked up the story: http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/27420057-418/utility-watchdog-fields-com

At Provider Power we continue to applaud the efforts of watchdog groups and public advocates for bringing to light the actions of companies that are not in the best interest of consumers.
